Introduction to Folk Music Studies
MUSC 213 SP
The course introduces a broad spectrum of approaches to and experiences with folk music, including both research and creative projects and ranging from the voices of peasants through the folk-based sound of recent rock
groups. Euro-American materials
will be stressed but worldwide sources will be tapped. Folk as an ideological and political, as well as musical, category will be discussed, as well as its relationship to popular and classical. Specific genres, such
as the ballad, will be both studied
and created.

The course includes hands-on as well as text experiences. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the
class list. NOTE: Students must
still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
