Topics in Genetic Engineering
MB&B 296 SP

This course will introduce the scientific research driving the current genetic engineering revolution, which has yielded genetically modified foods and new ways of fighting diseases, among other technological advances. In the first half of the semester, basic concepts will be discussed with the help of research articles from journals such as Science, Nature, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, etc. In the second half, students (in groups) will present research and/or popular science articles of interest for discussion in class. In particular, students will have the opportunity to critically analyze scientific articles and related science stories for the general public, as we follow the progression of "hot" science stories from their primary source to the 11 o'clock news.
