Vectors and Matrices
MATH 221 SP

This is a course in the algebra of matrices and Euclidean spaces that emphasizes the concrete and geometric. Topics to be developed are solving systems of linear equations, matrix addition, scalar multiplication and multiplication, properties of invertible matrices, determinants, elements of the theory of abstract finite dimensional real vector spaces, dimension of vector spaces and the rank of a matrix. These ideas are used to develop basic ideas of Euclidean geometry and illustrate the behavio r of linear systems. We conclude with a discussion of eigenvalues and the diagonalization of matrices. For a more conceptual treatment of linear algebra, students should enroll in MATH223.

MAJOR READINGS

To be announced.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

MATH122 strongly recommended as background, but not required. Students may not get credit for more than one of MATH221 and MATH223.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
