Cicero: Politician and Humanist
LAT 234 FA

This course will profile the life and thought of Cicero through the reading of representative works in Latin and English. Cicero will be placed in the evolving political scene of the first century B.C. but also will be analyzed as a major Roman thinker in the areas of political and rhetorical theory. Selections of the letters will be used to define better the character, ideals, weaknesses and strengths of the man.

MAJOR READINGS

In Latin: representative orations and letters, selections from the DE RE PUBLICA and DE LEGIBUS. In English: Plutarch's LIFE OF CICERO. Elizabeth Rawson's CICERO.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Mid-term examination. Class presentation. Final research paper.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

One year of college Latin or the equivalent. Students should consult with instructor before enrollment is completed in case of questions about placement.
