Nation Formation: Italy in the 19th Century
ITAL 241 SP

The longing for nationhood antedates the actual foundation of the modern Italian state (1860), and the various political, historical, and cultural expressions of the desires for statehood are the subject of this class. Taught in Italian and intended for Italian studies majors and other qualified students, the following authors and subjects will be studied: Ugo Foscolo; Italian Romanticism; I Promessi Sposi; Giacomo Leopardi; the Risorgimentalisti Garibaldi, Mazzini, and Cavour; Giovanni Verga; operas of Guiseppe Verdi; and other materials.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Several short papers (2-3 pp.), rewrites of those papers, longer final paper (8-10 pp.), presentation.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This class is intended for students who have spent time in Italy or who feel their preparation is sufficient. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
