As a bridge between the four-semester grammar sequence -- ITAL101, 102, 111, 112 -- and literature courses taught in Italian, this course aims to help students further develop their speaking, writing, and reading skills in Italian. Though not required of those who have completed the grammar sequence, it is recommended to students who need more exercise in the language before going on to advanced work in Italian studies. The course is also suited to students returning from study in Italy whose experience with the language in either classroom or informal settings while abroad makes it difficult for them to then fit into one of the grammar sequence courses. We will use L'ITALIANO LE TECNICHE DEL PARLARE E DELLO SCRIVERE (Giuseppe Pattano and Serena Bersani) as our primary resource--it deals with topics such as interviews, personal and business letters, how to conduct a formal debate, using the telephone, how to write a CV, rhetorical and literary terminology, and idiomatic language. This reading and accompanying exercises will be supplemented with a course reader that encompasses readings in a number of diverse registers: newspaper and magazine articles, short stories, Italian translations of familiar American and English literature. We will also uti lize Italian television programs, film, and opera. The overall objective is for students to be as conversant as possible by semester's end with the full range of contemporary Italian usage.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
