Heritage of India and Tibet
HUM 103 SP

This course is an introduction to the religious and philosophical thought and the literature of the Indian subcontinent. Readings in Hinduism and Buddhism, some Sanskrit plays and epics, and a few modern Indian novels are studied. We will also look at Western writers who have been influenced by these traditions. A central preoccupation will be with questions about the nature of the self.

Selections from the VEDAS, BRAHMANAS, and UPANISHADS THE BHAGAVADGITA Early Buddhist writings Tibetan Buddhist writings, including THE BOOK OF THE DEAD Markandaya, NECTAR IN A SIEVE Narayan, THE GUIDE

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Three or four papers. No final examination.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
