This methods seminar will use the lens of queer theory to examine the problems of state formation, political critique and popular mobilization in the post-1968 United States. In addition to addressing the nature of the American state itself, readings and research will emphasize post-Stonewall coalitions that have sought to eliminate state repression and gain equal access to the rights of citizenship. We will pay particular attention to realms of state activity that confuse the public and private spheres and to realms of cultural activity that can help produce, reflect or alter statist discourses. Topics will include immigration and citizenship, the political investment in marriage and family, discourses of national security, the production and regulation of pornographic cultural sites, and the politics of AIDS.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
