From Empire to Occupation: World War II and Its Legacy in Japan

World War II remains the most important event in 20th-century Japanese history, in terms both of how the Japanese view themselves and their place in the world and of how the rest of the world views Japan. This course examines the political, economic, military, and ideological issues that led to the war, the way in which the war was fought, and the events of the American Occupation that led to Japan's postwar political and economic recovery.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two short papers based on reading assignments (6-9pp), one longer research paper (15-18pp).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Open to all but extra reading (tba) will be helpful to those with no background in Japanese history.
