Major Issues in Jewish History I: From Antiquity to 1496
HIST 247 FA
The objective of this course is to introduce students to major issues and topics in Jewish history from antiquity to 1496. The emphasis will be on the diversity of Jewish experience in historical context. Examples of
topics explored during the course
include political status and relations between Jews and authorities, Catholic Church and the Jews, relations between Jews and their neighbors (Christians and Muslims), Jewish community. Readings will include both
primary and secondary sources.

Midterm and final exams. One 15-pp. paper for juniors and seniors. Two 7-8 page papers for first-year students and sophomores.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
Drop/Add form to the Registrar's
Office.
