United States History since the 1890s
HIST 240 SP

This course will survey the history of the United States from the 1890s through the 1980s. The impact of war, interethnic and interracial relations, popular protest movements, labor relations, and the nature of democracy in American will be among the topics highlighted. Many primary documents will be assigned.

Michael Kazin, THE POPULIST IMPULSE
Walter Lippmann, DRIFT AND MASTERY (1914)
Plus a substantial amount of primary documents.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Weekly ungraded 1-2 pp. papers; 2 graded 5 pp. essays, take-home final exam.

Attendance at the first class is required.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
