History of Traditional China

This course will trace the evolution of the defining characteristics of traditional Chinese culture: the family system, the imperial ideal, Confucianism, the creative tension between monarch and bureaucracy. The focus will be on the unique adaptability of the Confucian world view to various social and ideological challenges from B.C. 500 through the coming of the West in the early 19th century. Throughout, the emphasis will be upon those aspects of Chinese civilization that present a significant contrast to ways of thinking most familiar to students in the class, that is to say, Western, and, more precisely, American ways of thought. COL students must take this course for CR/U grade.
