This course will explore the experiences of women, representations of those experiences, and the implications of gender difference in 19th-century Western Europe (with particular emphasis on England and France). Topics will include gender and public life; the family and sexuality; industrialism and women's work; medical discourse and deviant women; imperialism; technology, mass consumption and urbanization; and the emergence of feminism.
