The Intelligensia and Power: The Struggle for Socialism in the Early Soviet Period

This course investigates the struggles among Soviet leaders during the first major crises facing the Bolsheviks: Civil War, economic collapse and revival, Lenin's death, the experiments of the 1920s with cultural transformation and women's liberation, the evolution of the Communist International, Soviet foreign policy leading to the pact with Nazi Germany, the political machinations surrounding Stalin's victory over Trotsky and Bukharin, and other topics.

MAJOR READINGS

There will be readings on and by the central figures, on policy struggles, and on major aspects of the early history of the Soviet Union.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

This is a research seminar. Students will select topics with the instructor's help, master research methods during the early part of the semester, present outlines of their project, give oral reports on work in progress and write research papers of approximately 20-30 pages.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students are expected to attend all sessions and be prepared to participate in class discussions. Attendance at the first meeting is essential. The seminar is designed not only for concentrators in History and the Russian and Soviet area, but for interested students who would like to study the subject in depth and to acquire skill at research. Preference for admission to sophomores but juniors and seniors may be admitted.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
