The Character of Tragedy: Gods and Mortals
GRK 251 SP

This course analyzes the relationship between humans and gods and the organization of human society in tragic drama through close readings of Aeschylus' PROMETHEUS BOUND and Sophocles's ANTIGONE. Selections from Aristotle's POETICS and secondary readings on Greek drama will provide the framework for assessing the structure and theme of the two plays.

MAJOR READINGS

Sophocles, ANTIGONE Euripides, MEDEA Aristotle, POETICS (selections) Selected secondary readings.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two take-home exams and a 10-page final paper.
