This is a reading course in the first great Greek historian, with special emphasis on the intellectual and cultural context of the origins of historical writing.

MAJOR READINGS

Selected readings from Herodotus primarily in Greek. Contemporary critical essays and background readings; comparanda from other historical authors and sources.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Translation and grammar assignments and quizzes; midterm/final.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Consistent preparation and attendance.
