Comparative Politics of Western Europe
GOVT 284 SP

This survey of contemporary West European states and societies emphasizes the study of England, France, Germany, Italy, and the Scandinavian democracies. It will also discuss the European Union. Readings and discussions will focus on topics such as the institutional principles and political processes of each country and the rise and decline of class-based politics. The course will also review recent developments including the politicization of race and the resurgence of national movements.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Twelve Pop Quizzes (20%), Two five-page papers (25% each), and a journal of newspaper articles (30%).

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
