This course traces the history of the other Europe from imperial domination in the 19th century to the imposition of Soviet rule after World War II. After a review of the pattern of socioeconomic change and political crisis since then, we study the collapse of 1989 and the struggles of the newly-independent countries to make the transition to democracy and a market economy. The course looks at Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Yugoslavia and Romania.
