This course is designed as a survey course for sophomores and juniors. It will focus on the political economy of contemporary China, with emphasis on the past 20 years of post-Mao reforms. Key topics will include agricultural reforms, industrial organization, the allocation of financial and fiscal resources, trade, foreign investment, corruption, and inequality. As this is a course in political economy, we will discuss the interaction between economic and political change. In addition, we will compare the case of China with other countries in transition.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
