Citizens and the American State
GOVT 201 FA

This course will examine citizenship, representation and democratic accountability in the United States. The course will consider the ways in which citizens attempt to influence political elites and the ways in which political elites attempt to influence citizens, comparing and contrasting elections, political parties, interest groups, social movements and protest. We will pay particular attention to the effects of institutional arrangements on the political participation of different racial an d ethnic groups, different classes and groups with different ideological agendas. A principal focus of the course will be the presidential election.

Short essays and final examination.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
