Dada and Expressionism

This examination of the German literary and artistic scene before, during, and immediately following World War I will focus on style as a reflection of a new vision of reality and on writers' attempts to influence social and political developments. Most of the works read will be plays or poems, but some short stories and literary manifestos will be included.

MAJOR READINGS

Strindberg, Wedekind, Sorge, Kaiser, Toller, Brecht, Sternheim plays. Anthologies of Expressionist poetry and short fiction. Dadaist texts and artistic productions.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Weekly short papers; several oral reports; one long paper or creative project.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Regular attendance and participation in class discussion expected.
