French Surrealism and the Avant-Garde
FREN 277 FA
Arguably the most significant of the international avant-garde movements, surrealism embraced a wide variety of artistic practices, including narrative, poetry, theater, film and painting. The course provides an
introduction to the movement, its
counter-tradition and legacy, its ambitions and limitations, and their implications on the historical avant-garde in general. Special attention will be given to some of the theoretical issues raised by the movement,
notably the problematic relationship b
etween avant-garde aesthetics and revolutionary politics, representations of the female body and the marginalization of women artists within the movement.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Oral presentations, short paper (4-6 pages), final paper (8-10 pages).
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Attendance in class is mandatory. Part of final grade will be based on participation in class discussion. This course is intended for students who have completed a French course numbered 215 or higher or have placed
out of FREN 215 through the
placement test this fall. Students who have not done this should consult with the professor before preregistering. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the
instructor prior to the first class, they wi
ll be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
