Exoticism
FREN 272 SP
This course will consider the fascination with the exotic--with foreign landscapes, customs, and culture--in 18th- and 19th-century French fiction and poetry. Discussions will focus on the representation of foreignness,
the construction of the exotic
woman, as well as on the status of the European gaze. Major authors include Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, Chateaubriand, Balzac, Merimee, Loti, Flaubert, Hugo, Baudelaire, and Gautier.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two papers, one final term paper, and one in-class oral presentation.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This course is intended for students who have completed a French course numbered 215 or higher, preferably 223 or 224. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the
instructor prior to the first class,
they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
