Don Juan: The Myth and French Literature
FREN 266 SP

This course presents an analysis of the Don Juan myth as a model against which to read literary structure. Readings of Tirso de Molina, Moliere, Laclos, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Merimee, Dumas, Gautier, Flaubert, Barbey d'Aurevilly, Rostand, Montherlant, and Playboy. Secondary readings include work by Otto Rank, Oscar Mandel, Jean Rousset, and David Winter.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Three 5-page papers; class presentations; class discussion.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Language lab work; DON GIOVANNI by Mozart, films. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
