This course will investigate concepts of motherhood and especially the mother/son relationship in 12th-century France through a study of the representation, role and significance of Perceval's mother in Chretien de Troyes' STORY OF THE GRAIL. We will also read accounts of other literary and historical mothers of the time.

This course will be taught in French. Most readings and all written assignments and class discussions will be in French. Students should have completed FREN223, FREN224 or another upper-level course before enrolling in this one.

COL students must take this course CR/U.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
