This course will consider the literary and artistic patronage of the Roman papacy of the high Renaissance, concentrating on the reigns of the two Medici popes, Leo X (1513-1521) and Clement VII (1523-1534) and on artists and writers such as Raphael, Michelangelo, Bramante, Lorenzo de' Medici, Castiglione, Macchiavelli, Luigi Guicciardini, and Pietro Aretino. A close reading of both visual and literary texts will place them in the context of papal politics in both Florence and Rome, of expanding Medic i family power in both cities, of the opening salvos of the Protestant Reformation, and, finally, of the Sack of Rome in 1527 and the revival of an international papacy under Paul III (1534-1549), in English.
