The richness and variety of Latin American literature is today well represented in translation, and novels and short fiction from all parts of the continent are available in English. As we read these works we will examine the social and cultural factors influencing writers in the diverse societies of Latin America. At the same time, we will consider the choices made by individual authors from the forms available to them, which range from the fantastic to the realist and the testimonial. The interior and exterior realities portrayed in these works are equally fascinating, and we will explore both, considering how factors such as gender and ethnicity, socioeconomic class and physical environment interact with the individual imagination in the creation of fictional works.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's office.
