Innocents Abroad: American Encounters with the Old World

This class explores how Americans have defined national and personal identity through their journeys to foreign and exotic locales. We will read 19th- and 20th-century texts (including fiction, memoirs, and visual art)
that raise questions about
perception and the representation of the self and others in fictions of travel.
