This survey of 20th-century literary, critical and cultural theories will emphasize key concepts--such as language and textuality; identity, subjectivity and gender; power, knowledge, cultural institutions and the state; and key figures, such as Saussure, Barthes, Bakhtine, Gramsci, Benjamin, Foucault, Althusser, Jameson, Scott, Butler, and Chow.

Several short papers.
