Academic Year 2000/2001
Modern Critical Theory
ENGL 294 FA
This is a theory course designed for students majoring in English or other literatures. It begins with a study of 19th- and early 20th-century thinkers--Marx, Freud, Nietzsche, Saussure--and then looks at the
transformations of their thought by figures
such as Barthes, Althusser, and Foucault. It also samples some of the other theoretical movements that have shaped critical theory in the past three decades, e.g., feminism, cultural studies, postcolonial studies.
MAJOR READINGS
Works by authors indicated above.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Several five-page papers, then a long final paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
The reading assignments are short but dense, requiring rereading. Class attendance will be indispensable to learning, and thoughtful class participation will help to determine the student's grade. This course fulfills
the English Department's theory
requirement. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still
submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
