Mark Twain and His Times
ENGL 278 FA
This course is a study of the life and writings of Mark Twain in their cultural and historical context.
MAJOR READINGS
We will read all of Twain's major works plus selected sketches, essays and novels by Bellamy, Howells, James, Harris, Cable, Chesnutt. Students will find it helpful to read Justin Kaplan, MR CLEMENS & MARK TWAIN, before
class begins.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Midterm paper (8 pages). Final paper (15 pages).
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This course counts towards the English department's historical knowledge requirement.
