History of the British Novel, Part II
ENGL 242 SP

In this course we will read major texts from the 19th and early 20th centuries, each one of which in some way re-defined what the "novel" was as a genre. Contexts will include advances in artificial intelligence, Darwinism, the vexed "woman question", the fragmentation of industrial society, the radical artistic movement of Impressionism, and the so-called "war to end all wars".

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

A five-page paper, mid-term, and take-home final.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Preference in Drop/Add period to people who have taken ENGL241. The reading load is quite heavy; you will do well to read some of the novels in advance.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
