Theory and Criticism of Drama: A Research Seminar

This course covers classic dramatic theory from Artaud to Grotowski and contemporary critical theory including theater semiotics, feminism, multiculturalism. Discussion is keyed to current local productions and student interests.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Frequent short papers and a final project consisting of an anthology of critical/theoretical texts dealing with a problem, a writer, a play/performance or a set of plays/performances with an introduction and a critical bibliography.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This is an advanced course. Some familiarity with theory is desirable; some course work in dramatic literature is highly recommended. This course counts toward the English Department's Theory requirement.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
