Plays in Pairs
ENGL 232 FA
Plays will be grouped in unorthodox sets to bring out unexpected parallels and relationships. If students wish, they may take both this course and ENGL237 (More Plays in Pairs) for credit.
MAJOR READINGS
The following pairings:
A DOLL HOUSE (Ibsen) and PYGMALION (Shaw),
OEDIPUS THE KING (Sophocles) and GOING TO POT (Feydeau),
THE FROGS (Aristophanes) and TRAVESTIES (Stoppard),
THE PELICAN (Strindberg) and
LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT
(O'Neill),
WOYZECK (Buechner) and OTHERWISE ENGAGED (Gray),
THE ALCHEMIST (Jonson) and GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS (Mamet),
BAAL (Brecht) and FEFU AND HER FRIENDS (Fornes).
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two written projects; one traditional paper, the other bizarre. In-class reports by students.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
More than three absences will affect a student's grade negatively. More than six absences will affect a student's grade drastically.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
Drop/Add form to the Registrar's
Office.
