Sacred Monsters

A few writers from the Third World have achieved great stature in the first; in fact, they have become "Sacred Monsters." This course will focus on writers like Salman Rushdie, V.S. Naipaul, C.L.R. James, and Aime Cesaire. In addition to discussing their major works, this class will explore the question of literary canonization, through the writings of major literary theorists.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Midterm, final, 2 essays.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
