Academic Year 2000/2001
Poetry Writing and Reading
ENGL 171 FA
Half a credit, a six-week course. Admission by drop/add only. Writing exercises on assignment. More grammar than one might imagine. Analyzing major poems. Some memorization. How it works: turn writing samples in to
the English Department Secretary.
I'd prefer to see your poetry, but if you don't know much about poetry, your prose will be better. List your phone number and your box number, as well as your name, on the sample. Class list will appear by 12 noon the
next day. Buy the textbook at
Atticus.
MAJOR READINGS
Poems by Stevens, Bishop, etc. Mostly 20th century.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
One or two poems most weeks, some textual analysis in the form of short papers.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Admission will be by Drop/Add. Please bring a form to the first class. Classes will meet on Wednesdays 7:00 p.m., in the board room at 285 Court Street, and at the instructor's house. Unless preregistered students
attend the first class meeting
or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
