Poetry Writing and Reading
ENGL 171 FA

Half a credit, a six-week course. Admission by drop/add only. Writing exercises on assignment. More grammar than one might imagine. Analyzing major poems. Some memorization. How it works: turn writing samples in to the English Department Secretary. I'd prefer to see your poetry, but if you don't know much about poetry, your prose will be better. List your phone number and your box number, as well as your name, on the sample. Class list will appear by 12 noon the next day. Buy the textbook at Atticus.

MAJOR READINGS

Poems by Stevens, Bishop, etc. Mostly 20th century.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

One or two poems most weeks, some textual analysis in the form of short papers.
