Academic Year 2000/2001
King Lear and The Tempest: The Worlds of Tragedy and Romance
ENGL 117 FA
Himself a famous playwright, Bernard Shaw once claimed: "It is impossible for the human mind to conceive a greater play than KING LEAR." This course will consist mainly of a close study of Shakespeare's masterpiece.
Attention will also be paid to
cultural/historical context. We will conclude with a briefer encounter with his final play, which presents a radically different way of conceiving the world.
MAJOR READINGS
KING LEAR and THE TEMPEST. However, we will also view faithful and fanciful treatments of the plays on film -- e.g., versions of LEAR by Olivier, Kozintsev, and Peter Brook, as well as Peter Greenaway's off-beat
PROSPERO'S BOOKS.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
In addition to attending and participating in class regularly, each student will write several brief papers.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
For students who genuinely LOVE reading. More than three absences will affect a student's grade negatively. More than six absences will affect a student's grade drastically.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
Drop/Add form to the Registrar's
Office.
