Paleoecology
E&ES 340 SP
This course is an in-depth introduction to the study of ancient environments and their connection to the fossil record and to the modern world. Topics to be covered include the changing habits and habitats of living
organisms from the time they first
appeared on the earth up until the present; the manner in which environments undergo transformation and succession over time; the value of paleoecology; and the methods used to identify and reconstruct ancient
environments from the present-day rock record
. Several field trips will be taken to a variety of modern environments and rock outcrops.
MAJOR READINGS
Textbook to be chosen; assigned readings from a variety of scientific journals.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
One mid-term, a comprehensive final, lab quizzes, and a field paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Lecture and one lab per week plus several field trips to really nice locations, to be taken in conjunction with Paleoecological Reconstruction Lab. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the
instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
