The Economics of Developing Countries
ECON 245 SP
This course presents an examination of the structural characteristics of Third World economies and an evaluation of the principal development models. Specific topics include population growth, agricultural development,
industrialization strategies, the
microenterprise sector, structural adjustment, the anatomy of foreign aid, and project analysis.
MAJOR READINGS
Tomich, Kilby, Johnston, TRANSFORMING AGRARIAN ECONOMIES (Cornell 1995).
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Bi-weekly empirical exercises. Two quizzes and a final. Classroom participation constitutes one-fifth of the final grade.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Graduates of Economics 219, 244, 252, 254 or 255 will be particularly well prepared to take this course. Reading assignments to be completed prior to discussion in class. Unless preregistered students attend the
first class meeting or communicate
directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
