Chaucer and Medieval Culture

Chaucer's major poetry will be read with care as our most sensitive witness to the cultural crisis of the later Middle Ages. Contemporary sources will help illustrate such issues as the decline of chivalry and monasticism, the position of women, heresy, the Black Death, the Peasants' Revolt.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two critical essays; one or two sessions as discussion leader (with partners); one final take-home open-book examination.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Preference given to majors in COL, English and Medieval Studies. This course counts toward the English Department's pre-1800 and historicity requirements.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
