This course studies of the interrelatedness of cultural values and historical processes at the moment in Europe, with special reference to America and Russia.
MAJOR READINGS
Andreyev, Bennett, Galsworthy, von Hofmannsthal, H. James, Mann, Pinero, Proust, Rilke, Santayana, Shaw, Unanmuno, Veblen, Wells. Beard, Brogan, Buckle, Fay, Haskell, Howe, Kohn, Kray, Nowell-Smith, Throp etc.,
Venturi. Work by Bridges, Hardy, Joyce,
Pound, Yeats, Klimt, Lodin, Sloan, Vrubel, Whistler, Ives, Mahler, Puccini, Schoenberg, Stravinsky.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Oral report, papers - one short, one long.

Intended as a history seminar for COL students; other upperclassmen may be admitted if space is available. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior
to the first class, they will be
dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
