The Power of Literature
COL 117 FA
This course surveys world literature from the Trojan War to World War II (1000 B.C.--2000 A.D.), placing it against some monuments of the Western world's and Eastern world's modern glosses and modern reflections, showing
the dynamism and aptness of
outstanding literary works, their historical development and philosophical changes, various methods of analysis, and the enduring strength of the skilled imagination.
MAJOR READINGS
ILIAD, OEDIPUS THE KING, THE SYMPOSIUM, THE APOLOGY, ANALECTS, JOB, MATTHEW, THE ORIGINS OF THE YOUNG GOD, BEOWULF, THE INFERNO, DON QUIXOTE, HAMLET, THE MASTER AND MARGARITA.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two short papers, one midterm, one final.
