Academic Year 2000/2001
Principles of Chemistry I
CHEM 143 FA
An introduction to chemistry intended for motivated students with a solid high school chemistry background and some exposure to calculus, this course will emphasize the fundamental principles of chemistry and is
recommended for students interested in
pursuing majors in science or mathematics. The course will stress modern concepts of molecular structure and bonding as the basis for understanding the properties of gases, liquids and solids; chemical reaction kinetics,
equilibrium, and thermodynamics;
patterns of chemical reactions; and topics of current interest. This course provides the best basic foundation for further study of chemistry and is strongly recommended for chemistry and MB&B majors. CHEM143, with
CHEM144, satisfies premedical general
chemistry requirements.
MAJOR READINGS
The text for this course is Oxtoby and Nachtrieb, PRINCIPLES OF MODERN CHEMISTRY (4th edition)
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Weekly problem assignments. Three in-class examinations and the final exam determine the student's grade in the course.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
1. A secondary school course in chemistry or its equivalent. 2. An elementary knowledge of calculus (Mathematics 121 may be taken concurrently). Problem help sessions (required) are run by graduate student teaching
assistants.
