This course will trace the changes in society and culture that took place in Europe from the end of the glacial period to the end of the Iron Age. Emphasis will be on the autonomy of European development and the relation between the prehistoric developments and the cultures of the Roman medieval period. Special concentration will be on recent work in England, France and Scandinavia.
