In a Manner of Speaking: An Introduction to Classical Rhetoric

In the course we will study the development of classical rhetoric and the fully-evolved system as familiar to Cicero and his contemporaries. We will analyze some speeches of Cicero that exemplify the three major styles of ancient oratory and look at sample themes and declamations from the Greco-Roman world. In the last portion of the course, we will discuss Plato's criticisms of rhetoric and the rehabilitation of rhetoric in recent critical theory. Students will have the opportunity to practice wha t they have learned in oral and written compositions.

MAJOR READINGS

Gorgias, HELEN Plato, GORGIAS Aristotle, RHETORIC Cicero, THE RHETORIC FOR HERENNIUS Cicero, Select Speeches Select readings in rhetorical theory (ancient and modern).

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Regular readings for each class; in-class reports; one long and two short papers. Final long paper may be delivered as a speech in class.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Regular class attendance expected. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
