Students in this course will conduct experiments and make observations in the field and in the laboratory to investigate several topics in ecology: the nature of ecological differences between species, competition between plants, release by plants of inhibitory compounds into the environment, determinants of species diversity, limits to population growth and environmental impact of human activity. Field studies will take place at a variety of local habitats, such as deciduous forests, bogs, and cactu s thickets. Data will be analyzed by statistical methods introduced in lecture.
