Painting I
ARST 439 SP
An introductory-level course in painting (oils) with emphasis on working from observation. Stress on the fundamentals of formal structure: color, composition, scale, format and paint manipulation. Individual and group
critiques. Museum trips and
discussion of campus exhibitions when possible.
MAJOR READINGS
A list of suggested readings will be distributed.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Midterm and final critique of paintings. Eight hours of independent studio work is required each week.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Materials fee: $100.00. Materials fee: $100.00. Selection by interview with instructor, at which time a portfolio containing no more than 10 works on paper may be presented. Interviews will take place during the
registration period (before the final
Friday). Dates and times when interviews will occur will be posted outside the painting studio: Studio South, Room 103. A list of students accepted into the course will be posted the final Friday of registration. Those
students who have been accepted int
o the course must pick up a Permission of Instructor form that Friday in Studio South, 103 by 4:00 p.m.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
Drop/Add form to the Registrar's
Office.
