Architecture II
ARST 436 SP

This course is an intensive exploration of the language of architecture as it relates to the situations of place-making, human habitation and cultural interaction. Its focus is two-fold: (1) the implementation of abstract, formal principles into specific site context and building program and, (2) the investigation of spatial experience and human perception. The intent of this course is to further develop the students' awareness and understanding of the built environment as a result of the study of architectural practice and theoretical issues.

MAJOR READINGS

Readings relevant to topics explored in each design project will be assigned. In addition, a sequence of theoretical texts on architecture will be introduced in order to familiarize students with the complexity of issues which have driven historical architectural debate.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Assignments include weekly in-class analysis problems and a series of longer (two to three week) design projects. Students will keep a sketchbook as a diary of sketches and development of architectural thought.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Course fee: $85. Students are expected to attend all class sessions. Although there are no formal prerequisites, the course serves primarily as a continuation of Architecture I.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
