This course is a study of selected works of architecture, fiction, film, music, painting, photography, poetry, and sculpture of the people of the United States. Three representative artists will be chosen for each area. The course is a survey, not a complete history. What makes a piece American? What can parallels and exchanges between one art and another tell us about the culture? How does the culture inform individual works and their artists? How has America's attitude toward arts and artists affected their development?
