African Diaspora Short Story

Starting with Frances Ellen Watkins Harper in 1859 and moving through the literary histories of the U.S., Africa, and the Caribbean to contemporary times, we shall explore the short story through close readings using a variety of ncluding structuralism, post-structuralism, historicism, and post-colonialism.

MAJOR READINGS

Authors include, but are not limited to: Charles Chesnutt, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Ann Petry, Toni Cade Bambura, Paule Marshall, George Lamming, Jamaica
Kincaid and Sembane Ousmane, and Ben Okri.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

One 25 page research paper or three 8-10 page papers. Midterm and final.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This course qualifies as an advanced seminar selection for majors.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
